Anytime you lighten dark hair, you will expose the underlying red pigment, especially if you go up more than 2 shades. You will have to use an ash based brown to counteract that. If you are going more than 3 shades lighter, I strongly reccommend a professional do this. You will uncover a lot of red and they will be able to select the right base for you and can follow up with toner if the color needs adjusting.I have black long hair. Ask for a beige or ash brown tone when you lighten your hair. It leaves it a nice, natural (and NO RED) color.
Since you have black hair, you need to use a color stripper before dying it the desired color I suggest going to a professional for these procedures.
keep it Long and Black, Try these styles or look at these great and gorgeous long black hairstyles.

You should get a neutral brown. The pigmet is blue and green so it will tone down the red pigment.
Use a Light Ash Brown shade.
